Transforming breathing habits for equestrians, to support lasting health & wellbeing

Breathe better, Live better
Many people breathe thousands of times a day without realising their breathing habits may be working against them.
Fast, shallow breathing, or mouth breathing can leave you feeling tired, anxious, tense, and unfocused.
Learning to breathe better can help restore calm, increase energy, improve focus and support your long-term health.
For equestrians breathing improvements can help with:
-
less tension in the body
-
a calmer more regulated nervous system
-
staying centered and composed under pressure
-
improved fitness and stamina
-
more energy
-
clearer focus and decision making
-
feeling more connected to your body
These changes can help with both your riding and looking after your horse - as well as everyday life!
When you restore functional breathing your horse will feel it too. Horses are sensitive to tension, breathing patterns and nervous system states. When your breathing improves, you become calmer. Your horse feels that regulation, softens, and together you both feel safer.
Sometimes the smallest change—how you breathe—can make the biggest difference.

Signs of dysfunctional breathing
Poor breathing habits often go unnoticed, yet they can affect how you feel every day. You may have dysfunctional breathing if you often:
-
breathe through your mouth
-
feel breathless easily during mild activities
-
sigh or yawn frequently
-
feel tired and lack energy during the day
-
snore or have disturbed sleep
-
wake feeling unrefreshed
-
breathe high in the chest rather than low in the diaphragm
-
feel anxious, tense or easily stressed
-
have difficulty concentrating
-
have muscle tension that you cannot relieve
-
find it difficult to loose weight
-
have poor circulation and cardiovascular issues
-
have a poor memory
-
overthink alot
The good news is that breathing habits can be retrained.

What can I expect through improved breathing?
Restoring functional breathing can support meaningful improvements in how you feel each day.
You may notice:
-
feeling calmer and more relaxed
-
more energy throughout the day
-
a clearer, more focused mind
-
deeper, more restorative sleep
-
greater resilience to stress
-
improved concentration, memory, and mental clarity
-
more stable mood and reduced reactivity
-
less muscle tension and greater physical ease
-
a greater awareness and connection to your body
-
improved circulation and oxygen delivery
-
support healthier metabolism
-
better cardiovascular efficiency
Small changes in how you breathe can create meaningful improvements in your health, energy, and overall wellbeing.

How can I check my own breathing?
If some of the signs above feel familiar, you might be curious whether your breathing habits are playing a role. If so, you can try this simple test to explore your own breathing.

About the Buteyko Method
The Buteyko Method is a breathing retraining approach developed in the 1950s by Ukrainian physician Konstantin Buteyko. The method focuses on restoring more natural breathing patterns by encouraging slow, gentle nasal breathing and reducing habitual over-breathing.
Many modern lifestyles contribute to dysfunctional breathing habits, such as mouth breathing, shallow chest breathing, and breathing too quickly. Over time these patterns can affect how efficiently the body delivers oxygen and regulates the nervous system.

The Buteyko Method uses simple breathing exercises and awareness techniques to help retrain these patterns. By learning to breathe more slowly, quietly, and through the nose, many people experience improvements in energy, sleep, stress resilience, and overall wellbeing.
Today the method is taught internationally and is widely used as a breathing retraining approach, particularly for people looking to improve respiratory health and restore more functional breathing habits.
Hi, I’m Kate — a Restorative Breathing Coach (Buteyko Method) and Energy Healing Facilitator. My work is shaped by my own healing journey, and the lessons I have learned alongside my two beautiful horses, Sarafina and Eloa
I spent many years navigating ongoing health challenges and feeling like something wasn’t quite right, I had success with some healing techniques, leading me to train in them, but still something felt missing.

It was at this point I was discovered restorative breathing for horses, but as I started researching, I realised… I had all of the same symptoms! Therefore I began to dive deep into the Buteyko Method for people, realising it was the missing piece in my health journey I had not realised I needed so badly.
When horses came into my life, it felt like a dream come true — but the reality was very different from what I had imagined. Instead of feeling calm and confident, I felt anxious, overwhelmed, and disconnected. It was through my journey with my horses that I finally began to slow down, listen, and rebuild a sense of safety within myself.
Both of my horses carried their own history of trauma and abuse. It was quite overwhelming being a first time horse owner, and at times, it felt more like a nightmare than the dream I had hoped for.
There were many instances that felt unpredictable, tense, and at times unsafe. Like many people, my first instinct was to try and do more, to manage, to 'fix', to make things better. I would spend hours researching, trying things and making changes. We saw gradual improvements, all was not lost, but the straw that broke the camels back for me was during 'firework season' here in the UK. I was devastated as to how awful the fireworks were around the new, supposed calm place I had moved my horses too. I spent many nights with them making sure they were OK - but it was extremely stressful for us all and it took me to an all new low in my time as a horse owner.
By restoring functional, healthy breathing habits with the Buteyko Method, I have more energy, deeper resilience, and a greater sense of safety within my own body — allowing me to access the level of healing I had needed for so long.
BUT not only that, I was seeing the profound effect my new found presence was having on my horses. As I was coming back into balance, it enabled them to as well. I never thought that this level of energy, confidence, happiness was possible, and I'm passionate about helping others find it to.
Today, I’m passionate about helping others equestrians build strong foundations so they can be calm, confident and present, not only when they are with their horses, but in everyday life happier, healthier lives.
This work is not just “breathwork” — it’s about gently retraining breathing patterns and creating sustainable habits that support long-term wellbeing.
